Steve Brown, owner of Wintech Electronics, programs one of the pick and place machines for the Wind Monitor II. For the first few boards we just had it place passives and others reeled parts that were already on the machine. The other parts were hand placed.

The pick and place machine has vacuum heads that suck the tiny SMT parts off the reel and then place them very accurately on the circuit board.

Steve and James inspect the first board out. It takes about 10 seconds to place the parts. James then spent 10 minutes hand placing the rest of the boards.

The placed board goes into the reflow oven. The oven has multiple zones the ramp the temperature up and until the solder melts. The board is then quickly cooled down before it slides out the other end of the conveyor.

Steve washes the remaining solder paste residue of the stencil. The same wash machine is used for cleaning the water wash flux off the boards. The boards are then dried with compressed air and/or a low temperature oven.
